	MICHAŁ SROKA
	

Michał Sroka is a visual artist and architect. He works at the Faculty
of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow leading his own studio Painting
in Expanded Space.&#38;nbsp; He has taken part
in nearly 100 exhibitions, numerous competitions, workshops, exchanges
and study trips. He deals with painting, drawing, photography, architectural
design and creates installations, objects and sculptures by combining different
media. The main area of his interest is the relationship between painting,
architecture, sculpture and space in
which they coexist.

Ugly, mediocre, suggestive or sexy: architecture is a metaphor because it operates with abstract means, which some people fill with their own content, while others see as a sum of contexts and a collage of unconscious associations . The cited quote seems to well reflect Michal Sroka's thinking about this particular discipline, as he treats architecture as a metaphor. For he is interested in its "afterimages" rather than iconic realizations, and if he already refers in his creative practice to the "classics" of modern construction, the ideological aspect, the representation of the meanings they carry, is more important to him than their design process. Thus, he freely juxtaposes photographs depicting events that only seemingly have nothing to do with each other: the demolition of the Pruitt-Igoe housing estate in Saint Louis, USA, called the symbolic end of modernist architecture, and the body of the Tarnów train station, damaged as a result of a terrorist attack on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. Both photographs emphatically show a farewell to hopes and illusions, in the case of the American housing estate: the naive faith of the pioneers of modernity in the social efficacy of architecture (overcoming racial and property divisions among the population living in Pruitt-Igoe), while in Tarnow the realization of the reality of the coming war catastrophe, which is also the end of an era. The neo-baroque-modernist architecture of the Tarnów train station, with its eclectic decor at the same time, corresponds perfectly with Michal Sroka's working method. This is because the artist works in the spirit of the "palimpsest," patiently uncovering successive "layers" of art history in his works, but subjecting them to critical revision. No wonder he is so keen on the collage technique, working, for example, with photographs of industrial architecture by Bernd and Hilla Becher, stressing that he is primarily interested in analyzing the typology of these buildings, with a particular focus on their metabolic nature: the successive layers superimposed on the works create a kind of utopian urbanism, with freely winding streets, fractally growing layouts. Architectural references are also revealed in the series of paintings "Constructions", especially their color scheme (a range of grays and blacks), matter (imitating unplastered walls), interpenetrating lines, infinitely multiplying their repetitions, recall the climate of Brutalist realizations. Michal Sroka is also preoccupied with the issue of mock-ups, widely discussed in the architectural world, which, to the regret of some circles, have generated their own truth , gaining the status of autonomous works of art. As the artist aptly notes, mock-ups often play with representation and objectivity, and thus resemble certain programs of modernist painting and sculpture (the biggest boom for mock-ups was precisely the 1950s). Michał Sroka's artistic peregrinations thus serve to uncover and explore further "constructopias" awaiting their definition, manifested at the intersection of many disciplines: design, painting, sculpture and architecture, much like his own creative practice.

Minimalism pursued the project of reconstituting art as an object, while sharing perceptual conditions with figurative sculpture. Both objects and figures located in real space are inscribed in the relationship of figure and background. This relationship is not painted, as in representational painting, but real, encompassing the distinguished subject within a neutral field.The concept of positioning refers to the objects annexed to the perimeter of the artwork, and the space in which and in relation to which we situate them. It is also a way of enlivening the space, of driving it into the perimeter of the work. Each position activates in some way the space belonging to the object. How far through their presence can the whole space take on new characteristics? To what extent can space be "embodied", and to what extent can it remain an indefinite abstraction imagining only its own extension? The meaning of activities in space comes down to its redefinition into a quality that expresses the individual, unique specificity of a place. In this approach, space reflects the state of a place, defined primarily by the presence of artistic objects, but equally by the person who visits that place. Each of these presences - filling the space - imbues it with the concreteness of its own identity.In the early 1920s, German artist Kurt Schwitters created the first sculptural assemblages in his studio, which in later stages took the form of a sculptural environment. It spread to several parts of the artist's family home in Hanover, eventually evolving into what we now know as Hannover Merzbau. After fleeing Germany in 1937, Schwitters created similar circles in exile in Norway and England.Between 1919 and 1927, El Lissitzky created a large collection of paintings, prints and drawings, which he referred to by the word Proun (an acronym for "project of affirming the new"). They combined a suprematist lexicon of of geometric, monochromatic forms with the tools of architectural reconstruction architectural. Lissitzky's works reflected his architectural training acquired in Germany before World War I, as well as the influence of Constructivism as well as Kazimir Malevich and the Vitebsk school. The radical re-conceptualization of space and material by Lissitzky, constructing a complex multidimensional space that floats between the coherent and the impossible, is a metaphor and visualization of the fundamental transformations in society, which, according to him, were to be the result of the revolution.

The collective exhibition ECHO is another (third) installment of cooperation between groups, organizations created by male and female artists: Polish (Piana Gallery) and Hungarian (Skurc Group); combining their different experiences and possibilities for self-organization. The project, based on the exchange of experiences and joint action, aims to bring geographically distant organizations closer together, building a field of cooperation outside the institutional system.The first part of the Polish-Hungarian project took place in Budapest, at the end of October 2022, the second installment in Krakow in December 2022. The third installment is presented in Tarnow - the city of birth of General Jozef Bem, the hero of Poland and Hungary; in the Office of Art Exhibitions located in Strzelecki Park, next to General Bem's mausoleum. Artist-run spaces are created in the cracks of the institutional system. They are driven by the need to revitalize the art scene. With the birth of spaces &#38;nbsp;nonprofit, art becomes decentralized, the voices of new communities are heard through the internal support of small communities. Countless words have been written about artist-run spaces, initiatives that have existed since at least the 19th century (Courbet's Realism Pavilion, for example) and extended into the 20th century as well. Stuck between the institutional and commercial art worlds, artists to this day rightly want to take matters into their own hands, creating what Lotte van Geijn calls the "top layer of the art world," or reversing the metaphor, what we like to think of as the roots of the art infrastructure: opportunities to show art that are to some extent freed from both market obligations and state propaganda.Historical research also points to links between so-called "independent" spaces and the boon of subsidies. Many observers realize that there is a dialectic at work here: one that disrupts the anti-establishment and marginal role of artist-run spaces as an instrument for identifying rising artistic values.&#38;nbsp; A dialectic that can throw the outsider into the circuit of the commercial system.There are also social and political criticisms of artist-run spaces. But they do not stop the positivity characteristic of such ventures. Some places have taken on the task of archiving their own history. They reconfigure the art scene by building networks parallel to the dominant art world, represented by the art market and museums, since the porous nature of the boundaries of these two worlds never leads to the complete absorption of one by the other. In terms of content, they have provided tools for the dissemination of new art forms, promoted new forms related to music, dance, video and performance, and contributed to the promotion of art books as an alternative form of expression. Even when these experiences are universal, the geographically distant artist-run spaces are very different. They serve the same purposes in different ways, as they must adapt to specific social and economic conditions that vary from country to country, city to city, and often even neighborhood to neighborhood. The exhibition is under the honorary patronage of the Hungarian Consulate

	OUT OF SPACE vol. IIPIANA GALLERY

The Out of Space exhibition is the second part of a collaboration between the Polish (Piana Gallery) and Hungarian (Skurc Group) artist-managed space, bringing together their different experiences and capabilities, with the knowledge that the ultimate goal is the same. Based on information transfer and shared thinking, the project aims to bring small communities together, expanding the network of support beyond the institutional system.

The activities of the Piana Gallery Foundation focus on mapping and promoting the latest phenomena in the visual arts, with a particular focus on the Krakow art scene. The gallery provides a space to present the work of the youngest artists, including those making their debut, by integrating it into the broader context of the art world.SKURC Group, on the other hand, began operating as a studio and exhibition space on Népsziget in the summer of 2019, transforming the locker rooms and showers of the former MAHART shipyard spaces into a shared space. The goal was to create an exhibition spac as well as a studio for young artists, enabling the realization of various art projects.

	OUT OF SPACE vol. IIPIANA GALLERY

The Out of Space exhibition is the second part of a collaboration between the Polish (Piana Gallery) and Hungarian (Skurc Group) artist-run spaces, bringing together their different experiences and capabilities, with the knowledge that the ultimate goal is the same. Based on information transfer and shared thinking, the project aims to bring small communities together, expanding the network of support beyond the institutional system.

The activities of the Piana Gallery Foundation focus on mapping and promoting the latest phenomena in the visual arts, with a particular focus on the Krakow art scene. The gallery provides a space to present the work of the youngest artists, including those making their debut, by integrating it into the broader context of the art world.SKURC Group, on the other hand, began operating as a studio and exhibition space on Népsziget in the summer of 2019, transforming the locker rooms and showers of the former MAHART shipyard spaces into a shared space. The goal was to create an exhibition spac as well as a studio for young artists, enabling the realization of various art projects.
